Brighton earn dramatic win over Everton with VAR help

Brighton won in dramatic and controversial circumstances in a match featuring the first VAR-awarded penalty of the season. Replays suggested that the Everton defender had perhaps inadvertently trodden on Connolly’s foot and Neal Maupay stepped up to convert. Then, in the final minute of time added on, the otherwise excellent Lucas Digne deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper from Leandro Trossard’s cross to give Graham Potter’s side the points. The Seagulls had started brightly in the Sussex gloom but can count themselves fortunate to have emerged victorious. Everton only trailed for five minutes, equalising when Richarlison out-jumped Adam Webster to head in Lucas Digne’s corner at the near post with the ball taking the faintest of touches off the Brighton defender. Richarlison was the half’s standout player, beautifully spinning past Lewis Dunk to setup another chance for Walcott whose shot was blocked by the recovering Webster. They lost Bernard to injury after half an hour but Gylfi Sigurdsson soon began to have an impact from the bench. The Toffees picked up the momentum after the break and had a sight of goal when Alex Iwobi fired a low shot at Ryan following a corner. Brighton had the ball in the net with Gross scoring at the near post from Davy Propper’s pass but the linesman had correctly called the midfielder offside. With the game looking to be heading towards a stalemate, Marco Silva brought on Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Fabian Delph. Two minutes after his arrival, Calvert-Lewin made his mark, finishing low across goal from Mason Holgate’s perfectly-weighted pass with his first touch to lift Everton towards the top half of the table. After the controversial award, Maupay scored to leave Everton players and coaching staff furious with the officials. It was all Brighton for the remaining minutes and Dunk went close with a driven free-kick which Pickford was unable to hang on to. The pace and guile of Trossard has been missed at the Amex and it was he who was the catalyst for the dramatic finale, bursting down the left to cross low into the box where the hapless Digne scored past Pickford.
