Watford equal their worst-ever start to a league campaign

This was far from a classic Bournemouth display, lacking the attacking verve and fluency that was once typical of them under Eddie Howe.  Watford wasted a chance to take the lead in the second minute when Abdoulaye Doucoure shot over from 10 yards after visiting goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale palmed out Gerard Deulofeu’s cross. Deulofeu was making an early nuisance of himself, on his comeback to the starting line-up, and he soon delivered an in-swinging corner that struck the near post, then Craig Dawson’s follow-up shot was blocked. Tom Cleverley’s injury problems continued when he had to be substituted off after appearing to be hurt while making a challenge.   Bournemouth had made a slow start but quickly grew into the game and hit the woodwork themselves when captain Steve Cook headed against the bar from Ryan Fraser’s delivery. Tempers were lost when Callum Wilson thought he had been fouled, eventually leading to a mass of players pushing and shoving, with Steve Cook looking the most upset.
