Protesters attack US embassy in Iraq

Iraqi supporters of a powerful Iranian-backed militia were attacking the outside of the fortified zone that surrounds the US embassy compound in Baghdad, protesting against American air strikes that killed 25 fighters from the group, news agencies reported. The protesters carrying coffins of the dead marched to the Green Zone after holding funerals for those killed in the airstrikes, reportedly attempting to storm the heavily guarded US facility. Among the 40 or so armed groups that make up the Popular Mobilisation, Kataib Hezbollah is widely considered very close to Iran, and is believed to have operational ties to the Quds Force, the clandestine overseas arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard which is overseen by Qassem Suleimani, an Iranian military commander.
