We may all be using Zoom, but we're still lacking the technology to make distanced society sustainable

While millions more people will work from home after this crisis than did before, the hope that digital communication could completely supplant face-to-face interaction has proved somewhat optimistic. The cost of lost months will cast a long shadow; we will emerge from this crisis somewhat threadbare, with a hefty bill to pay.
