University of Derby suspends students over offensive group chat

The University of Derby has suspended six male students, including two special constables, over “degrading and offensive” comments allegedly made about their female peers in an online group chat. It took action after screenshots were posted online that purportedly showed details of an group chat in which it was claimed the men rated the appearances of female students, and one of them joked about using child rape in a chat-up line. An earlier Guardian investigation revealed that hundreds of university students had been disciplined or expelled for making sexually explicit, homophobic or racist comments on social media.
